I guess one reason I write is
because I’ve tried everything else
and there’s really nothing else I’m good at.
Oh, and this . . .
Why I Write
Growing up, I loved to play outside-softball, football, bike riding. When it was too hot to run around, I rode my bike to our local library to sit in the air-conditioning and read. It’s one of my favorite childhood memories.
One warm summer day, when I was about twelve, my friend Pat, cracked open a new deck of playing cards that featured famous Women Authors. I was mesmerized. Not because I came from a prudent Puritan background that eschewed card playing (true) and I was rebelling (true), but, because women authors were prominently displayed on a deck of cards alongside the list of books they had written with a short bio.
It was the coolest thing I’d ever seen. Blue-haired Willa Cather, Pearl S. Buck, Flannery O’Connor, Edith Wharton, Eudora Welty, George Eliot, Louisa May Alcott, Jane Austen, Edna St. Vincent Millay, Phillis Wheatly, etc. I’m fairly certain Pearl and Flannery had no idea their glossy image would one day be posted on the back of the Queen of Hearts and the Ace of Spades. But, there they were and I was smitten that summer day.
I wanted my mug to be on the back of a deck of cards some day.
And that is why I write.
P.S. If you comment on my blog, I will eventually choose someone to send a brand new pack to. Yeah, I’ll order it from the great big online box store.
A Pithy Bio
I write and edit in an ordinary house where I live with my scruffy construction-guy husband and children. But, I’d rather live in an old hardware store for the aroma, ambiance, and possibilities.
